Dr. Vernadette Vicuña Gonzalez is a professor at UC Berkely in the Department of Ethnic Studies, Asian American and Asian Diaspora Studies. Her work and research interests focuses on cultures of U.S. empire, primarily tourism and militarism, and the intersection of race, Indigeneity, gender, and sexuality in Asia and the Pacific. She is a prolific academic writer and frequent speaker. She wanted a website to serve as a home for all her publications, media appearances, and presentations.
Vernadette chose her color scheme of grays and blues with a splash of green. For a site icon, she suggested using her initials.
While sketching with pencil and paper, I knew I could get 2 Vs out of a single triangle, and noticed how V lines cut into a solid shape form a G. Making 2 identical triangles and rotating one not only are V V G, but also evoke imagery inline with Vernadette’s background and professional interests. She’s a writer, and the logo looks like a decorative corner bookmark. She’s a teacher, and it resembles a paper airplane. She’s written about Hawaii and the Philippines, and it reminiscent of a Pacific island manta ray tattoo. So it works on several levels.
