A professor at Yale School of Medicine and a practicing physician, Christine J. Ko is the author of several academic books on dermatology and dermatopathology. Her first book for the general audience, which was driven and informed by her own experience as the mother of a patient whose deafness was missed by doctors for some time, called for a website that reflects the concepts of visual, auditory, and emotional perception that she writes about.
I was drawn to the conch shell, not only because the cochlea inside the ear resembles a nautilus conch, but also because conch shells are used to amplify voices as well as produce an auditory illusion of hearing the sea. The outer shape of the nautilus is ear-shaped, to boot, as Christine pointed out, and I thought that it worked well because it also looks like a C. We took it a step further and put Christine’s initials, CJK, right there in the middle, too.
